Mahjong Doesn’t Have to be Intimidating

It’s one of the smartest, most social games you’ll ever learn.

Mahjongistas is a welcoming community where people come together to learn, play, laugh, and occaisonally become just a little obsessed with mahjong.

Whether you’ve never touched a tile or you’re ready for your next game night, we’ll help you learn without the intimidation, the confusing terminology, or feeling like you’re slowing everyone down.

Our goal is to get you playing - questions are encouraged, mistakes are expected, and new connections happen almost as often as a good Charleston.

Hi, I’m Jara

A few years ago, if someone had told me I'd be teaching mahjong, I probably would have laughed.

Like so many people, I grew up watching my grandmother play. I was fascinated by the game, but once I sat down with the National League card, all the terminology and fast-paced play felt overwhelming. I wasn't sure I'd ever be able to keep up. Then one day, it clicked, and I was hooked.

What I discovered wasn't just a game, it was a community. Mahjong has a way of bringing people together. Conversations flow, friendships form, and before long, you're already planning your next game.

That's why I started Mahjongistas.

Based in Maplewood/South Orange, New Jersey, I've had the joy of introducing hundreds to mahjong through lessons, mixers, and private events. What began as a local community has grown to events in New York City and even Los Angeles, bringing new players together one table at a time.

My goal is simple: make mahjong feel less intimidating and a lot more fun. I break the game into manageable steps, create a welcoming space where questions are always encouraged, and help beginners build the confidence to sit down at any table.

Whether you're joining your first lesson or becoming a regular at our mixers, I'm so glad you're here.
